Mr Katayama is currently a “RIJI”of the Sogetsu School, a council of Ikebana Artists’ Association; a “RIJI” of the Sogetsu School Teacher’s Association; secretary-general of the Nishi-nihon Kdo Federation; head of the Nishi-nihon Kado Federation, Fukuoka Chapter; vice president of Fukuoka City Kado Exhibition; a permanent member of Fukuoka Cultural Federation.

1962 Started to take Sogetsu ikebana lessons in the class of Sofu Teshigahara, the founder and first headmaster of Sogetsu School and Kasumi Teshigahara, the second headmaster of the School

Joined the work at the studio as a Sogetsu Atelier staff

1966 Began to accompany Sofu Teshigahara and Kasumi Teshigahara to cities in Japan and to overseas abroad

1978 “RIJI” of Sogetsu School Teacher’s Association

1981 Began to accompany Hiroshi Teshigahara, the third headmaster of the School to cities in Japan, Hawaii, New York, Korea and other countries

Head of Ikebana International Fukuoka Chapter (till 1987)

1983 Exhibited and demonstrated the ikebana works at Singapore Chapter of the Sogetsu School

Since then has travelled to Singapore for demonstrations at annual exhibition

1993 In May travelled to Taiwan for demonstration at the monthly assembly of Ikebana International Taiwan Chapter

1994 Travelled to the major four cities in Australia for demonstrations and workshops

1995 Travelled to Malaysia for demonstrations and workshops at Ikebana International Kuala Lumpur Chapter

1997 Travelled to the major five cities in America for demonstrations and workshops

Travelled to four countries of Eastern Europe for demonstrations and workshops under the sponsorship of the Japan Foundation

Published a collection of his works entitled “Ryo”

1998 Had a solo exhibition at the Hakata Daimaru department store

2005 Exhibited and demonstrated the ikebana works in Seoul at the event cerebrating the Japan-Korea Friendship Year

2012 Chairperson of Hospitality Committee for Ikebana International 10th World Convention

2014 Demonstrated at Hong Kong Flower Show

2017 World Convention Chairperson for Ikebana International 11th World Convention

2019 Welcome flower at G20 Fukuoka Welcome Reception




Dr Osamu Inoue

Dr Inoue is Associate Professor at Kyoto University of the Arts. He is a leading academic in ikebana studies with a number of publications on ikebana and Japanese traditional arts. He is also Professor in Sagagoryu School of Ikebana, and President of the International Society of Ikebana Research (ISIR). He has helped Ikebana Gallery Award as a special judge since its foundation. He has lectured on ikebana at Monash University, Bauhaus University, Chinese Culture University, and Nottingham Trent University.
